For the last few weeks, we're being visited by a couple of Western Scrub Jays.
Of course, I've just called them blue jays my whole life.
They were a little shy at first.
Look how pretty I am... got any treats?
Yeah, man. That's what I'm talkin' bout.
The moment they hear our voices or walk outside,
these little critters come swooping into our backyard for a treat.
If we don't respond, they squawk a little.
Hmmm... eyeing the hummingbird feeder?
These little friends are so cute!
They've already gone through two bags of roasted, unsalted peanuts.
For the most part, they take the peanuts away and bury them.
However, I've seen them actually eat a few peanuts.
Each time they come to our yard for peanuts,
they scan to see if they need to come back and get the rest.
And they keep coming back until they take them ALL.
So far, they won't take a peanut out of your hand.
They come a little closer to us now than at first.
One is fatter and bolder than the other.
I'm not sure if it's the male or female.
I want to see "little" scrub jays pretty soon...
So, now we've got more backyard pets (the hummingbirds stay all year long).
We have Western Scrub Jays that visit every day! Aren't they handsome? They squack and enjoy the sunflower seeds and the bird baths, and fit right in with the Sparrows, Mourning Doves, Black Headed Grosbeaks and a big American Robin. Ours are still a bit shy...I'll try putting peanuts out for them- thnx for the idea :)
ReplyDeleteThe scrub jays are a lot of fun. They have little attitudes and try to communicate with their squawks and beak pecking. It's funny. You're lucky to have so many different kinds of birds. When we lived in Suwanee, GA, we had some neat birds - bluebirds, cardinals, woodpeckers...
